It was for the first time in the history that West Indies lost a world cup final in 1983.
West Indies won the toss and chose to field. Indian innings was opened by Sunil gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth. West Indies' first over was bowled by Any Roberts. India's first run came when gavaskar flicked a short delivery on leg stump towards the short fine leg fielder.
India's first wicket fell in the form of gavaskar. He was caught by the keeper Jeff Dujon and Roberts drew the first blood. Next came in the Semi final hero Mohinder Amarnath. Srikkanth in his stereotype batting manner played some aggressive shots and Amarnath stood solid to create a 57 runs partnership for the 2nd wicket.
Srikkanth fell on the score of 38 runs when he was given an lbw off the bowling of Marshall.
Next man to follow was Yashpal Sharma who along with Amarnath added 31 runs for the 3rd wicket. Amarnath was bowled by a superb delivery from Holding.
India lost their 3 main batsmen on mere 90 runs. Next came in Sandeep Patil, but his partnership with Yashpal Sharma ended when the later fell to Gomes and India were 4 down on 92.
Next to follow was the skipper Kapil and India were 100 in 32 overs. Kapil made a quick 15 runs off 8 balls before Holding caught him at the long on boundary. Another wicket fell soon in the form of Kirti Azad when he tried to pull a short delivery from Roberts and ended up giving a simple catch to the 'Big Bird' Joel Garner.
Most of the scoring after that was done by Sandeep Patil that included a six over square leg boundary. Soon the 19 run 7th wicket partnershp ended when Binny gave a sitter to garner at mid wicket.
India's tail scored 42 score runs among them and India ended up making only 183 runs which as per the Indies' might was just not enough.
But what followed even the deepest cricketing minds couldn't have imagined.
West Indies started their chase with Greenidge and Haynes opening their batting and Kapil started the proceedings for India. Sandhu bowled Greenidge who was trying to be over cautious and only managing 1 run off 12 balls. Next to follow was West Indies' batting star Viv Richards who looked to unleash his batting prowess on Indian medium pacers.
India's hopes were fading as Richards played some outstanding cricketing shots when Haynes fell to Madan lal when he looked settled and deemed for a big one on the score of 13 runs. West Indies were now 50 for 2.
On the score of 57, what happened went in the history of World Cup cricket as one of the most decisive moments and much turners. Kapil Dev took a fantastic catch going backwards, and the batsmen was none other than Viv Richards. The hope of winning the world cup was visible in the eyes of Indian audience and Madan Lal's demeanor. Richards was gone after making a quick 33 of 28 balls.
Soon the West Indian batsmen batting order fell like a house of cards after Gomes and Lloyd fell in quick succession and India were looking all set to win their first world cup . Only Dujon and Marshall managed to score runs and the whole West Indies team were all out on 140 runs.
Mohinder Amarnath caught up Holding infront of his stumps and went down in the history. India won their first and only world cup till date.
